Update On Ocean Nine Greens
11 October 2009
As you know, all the greens on the golf course were aerified on 7 September 2009 which was part of our normal maintenance schedule.
However, shortly after the aerification, the Ocean Nine greens started losing their green color and turning brown. Through our diagnostics we found that the soil and water sodium levels were above the required level. Once we had identified that the salt level was the root of the problem we immediately put in place an action plan to rectify this situation.
Over the past two weeks we have been leaching out the greens, which is a process whereby clean water is sprayed through the profile to rid the soil of its salt content. In conjunction with this we have been using a high dosage of gypsum to help clear the salt content and also we have been applying nutrients and fertilizer to help the grass grow.
The Reverse Osmosis (seawater desalination plant) is operating on a daily basis to produce enough water to irrigate the course and we have recently changed the membranes and everything is functioning properly. The water & soil is tested and monitored on a daily basis to ensure that no more ‘salinity’ problem is present.
The Ocean greens continue to improve. We will replace all the bare areas, especially around the perimeter of the greens with new sod and this will be completed by 31 October 2009. We are confident that our Ocean greens will recover to a satisfactory level for our 2009 Clearwater Bay Amateur Open, which is scheduled for Saturday, 21 November 2009. To encourage growth and speed up the recovery process we will implement a half-day closure of the Ocean Nine for general play on some selected days during the week leading up to the Clearwater Bay Amateur Open. This will give our Maintenance Team time to work on the greens without disturbing our members and guests.
We hope the above update on our Ocean Greens have answered some of your queries that you might have on the conditions of these greens. You can rest assured that the management and committee have taken the immediate action to address the Ocean Nine greens problem with diligence and determination.
We sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support of The Clearwater Bay.
Yours sincerely
